INTRODUCTION TO SEED FARMING is intended for gardeners and small to medium-scale farmers who intend to grow seed for commercial seed companies. The workshop will introduce growers to fundamental practices and considerations for growing commercial seed crops, with techniques for multiple scales of farming. The workshop will cover working with seed companies, planning the season, record-keeping, planting, harvesting, processing, and storing seed crops.
The instructor Amirah Mitchell is a farmer, seed-keeper, storyteller & educator with special devotion to her ancestral seed crops of the African Diaspora. She has a B.S. in Horticulture from Temple University. Amirah has worked in agriculture, horticulture, grower education, and food justice since 2007, including work at urban farms in Massachusetts, Georgia and Pennsylvania. Currently, Amirah works at Truelove Seeds, a Philadelphia-based seed company specializing in cultural heirlooms, and is the Seedkeeper-in-Residence at Greensgrow Farm, managing the 2021 Seedkeeping Fellowship Program.
